AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college readiness system designed to prepare students in the academic middle for four-year college/university success. AVID targets students in the academic middle who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These students are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. Often times, they will be the first in their families to attend college. AVID has a proven track record of bringing out the best in students and in closing the achievement gap.

AVID develops students’ academic skills and enhances academic behaviors across all content areas in an inclusive, “family” atmosphere of support. AVID students enroll in a year-long AVID Elective course, an academic elective designed to support and enhance achievement in the honors and AP classes so vital for college preparation. The key elements of AVID are the WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) strategies and collaborative tutorials. The class is designed to teach and reinforce the skills needed for success, including effective studying, Cornell note-taking, time management, writing, reading, and research. Students also learn about colleges and universities (especially the application and financial aid processes) and prepare for college admission tests such as the SAT or ACT. Students are encouraged to explore occupations through research, curriculum, and guest speakers.

Students interested in AVID must apply and be interviewed before they are enrolled. For more information, contact the DPHS AVID Coordinator, Mary Louise Wells [email protected] or visit our program website
